One of my favorite things about a city trip is staying at a beautiful boutique hotel. A place where great attention has been paid to the (design) interior, the service is top-notch, and you’re spoiled with a delicious breakfast in the morning.
For the past few years, I’ve been going on more weekend getaways in my home country the Netherlands. And since I love boutique hotels, I usually let the destination be determined by the hotel I want to stay at. As a result, I now have a growing list of the best boutique hotels in the Netherlands. Perfect inspiration for a city trip or weekend getaway.
Of course, there are many more hotels where you can have a great stay. But I only want to share the boutique hotels in the Netherlands where I’ve personally stayed and can genuinely recommend.
Finch Boutique Hotel in Deventer
Deventer is such a charming city for a weekend getaway! And staying at Finch Boutique Hotel definitely makes the experience complete. If you’re arriving by train, it’s just a 5-minute walk to the hotel, right in the city center.
Finch is housed in a historic corner building, giving it a beautiful appearance with its large windows. Inside, it’s a super nice and stylish boutique hotel.
The rooms are luxuriously and modernly furnished, with fun details like a record player that plays music when you first enter your room. There are more vinyl records waiting for you, so you can have your own mini-party.
Finch has 31 rooms in 8 different categories, from the small boutique to a super spacious 2 bedroom suite. I stayed in the Boutique+ room. There’s no restaurant, but there’s a cozy living room bar where you can get drinks, brunch, and tasty snacks all day. This is also where the delicious fresh breakfast is served.
Plantage Rococo in Velsen-Zuid
Plantage Rococo is probably the most photogenic boutique hotel on this list. Although it’s located in the middle of the Randstad, you leave the city’s hustle and bustle behind as soon as you drive onto this 18th-century estate.
The hotel is housed in a beautiful mansion with 11 rooms and suites. I visited with my sister, and we stayed in the Suite Family, where we each had our own bedroom. Super convenient! The hotel is equipped with all modern amenities, but keep in mind that due to its historic nature and wooden floors, it can be a bit noisy.
Haarlem and Amsterdam are nearby, but you can also enjoy a delicious dinner in the beautiful hotel restaurant. And trust me, once you’ve checked in, you’ll want to stay as long as possible.
The Duke Hotel in Den Bosch
Another great city for a weekend getaway in the Netherlands is Den Bosch. If you’re like me and a fan of Scandinavian (with a touch of industrial) design, you’ll love The Duke Hotel. With 17 rooms and suites, it’s truly a boutique hotel.
Though it’s not large, there’s a ‘living room’ next to the reception where you can enjoy breakfast in the morning and grab coffee/tea and a snack during the day. But since The Duke is right in the city center, surrounded by café terraces and restaurants, I’d suggest dining out. I stayed in the Deluxe Room, which overlooks the bustling shopping street and the famous Sint-Jans Cathedral.
Villa Augustus in Dordrecht
The award for the most original place to stay goes to Villa Augustus in Dordrecht. After having coffee here during a day trip to Dordrecht, I decided to come back to spend the night.
And these aren’t your average hotel rooms. At Villa Augustus, you can sleep in the former water tower! Our room still had the original iron floor (where the water used to be stored), and through the high windows, you have a beautiful view over the Wantij river. The private bathroom is on a lower level, accessed by a staircase. Each room is uniquely furnished, almost as if you’re staying at someone’s home. This gives it a cozy vibe, although it might not be as sleek and luxurious.
For breakfast, you walk through the beautiful (vegetable) garden to the former pump house, where the restaurant and reception are located. You can also dine here in the evening, with vegetables from their own garden. I wasn’t as impressed by the dinner, but overall, staying at Villa Augustus is a super fun experience.
Boutique Hotel Beekhuizen in Velp
Are you looking for a luxurious boutique hotel in nature? Then I can’t think of a better place than Boutique Hotel Beekhuizen in Velp. This small-scale hotel is located in the Veluwezoom National Park and is truly an oasis of tranquility. Mooirivier in Dalfsen
Another beautiful spot in the Netherlands for those who prefer nature over the city is Mooirivier in Dalfsen. The hotel is situated right on the river Vecht, where you can enjoy a drink on the large terrace with a stunning view, and completely unwind.
We stayed for a few nights in the Superior Room, which has everything you need but also has a somewhat standard look and feel. The room itself isn’t the highlight, but everything around it makes it a fantastic place to stay for a few days. I’d recommend renting a bike from the hotel to explore the area during the day. And don’t skip the hotel’s restaurant, Aan de Oever, where we had a wonderful dinner.
Voco The Hague
With more than 200 rooms, this hotel in The Hague might not qualify as a ‘boutique’ hotel. But after a delightful stay in this former bank building, I still want to share it with you if you’re looking for a beautiful, luxurious hotel in The Hague.
Voco The Hague is located right in the city center. Across from the Binnenhof and Hofvijver, next to the Plaats square with nice café terraces, and close to plenty of shops and restaurants. The art deco building is over 100 years old, but inside, everything is modern and new with beautiful rooms (I stayed at the Premium Room). Fun detail: you can enjoy a cocktail in the old bank vault at the hotel bar, Ultramarijn.
Kruisherenhotel in Maastricht
For a 5-star luxury stay in the south of the Netherlands, you should go to Kruisherenhotel in Maastricht. What used to be a 15th-century Gothic church and monastery is now a stunning design hotel. The bar and hotel restaurant Spencer’s are located in the church, and the rooms are in the former monastery. Want to know more about Kruisherenhotel Maastricht? I wrote a full review about my stay.
Townhouse Design Hotel in Maastricht
Another great option in Maastricht—and more budget-friendly than the Kruisherenhotel—is Townhouse Design Hotel. It’s less than a 5-minute walk from the train station, so perfect if you’re arriving by public transport. It’s also close to all the lovely restaurants and coffee spots in the cozy Wyck neighborhood.
At Townhouse Design Hotel, they do everything to make you feel welcome, from the warm cup of soup you get at check-in to the goldfish you can have in your room for extra company. Of course, there’s always a fresh slice of Limburg pie waiting for you in the cozy Living Room. The rooms aren’t very spacious but are cozily (and uniquely) decorated with super comfortable beds. Want more space? Across the street, there are also modern Townhouse apartments.

Mabi City Centre Hotel in Maastricht
If you prefer to stay closer to the city center of Maastricht, Mabi City Centre Hotel is a lovely spot. And it’s located in a special place, as this used to be the first cinema in Maastricht. You can still enjoy a small private cinema as a guest. Bring on the popcorn! Most of the rooms aren’t very large but are stylishly decorated and equipped with all modern comforts.
The best spot in the hotel is Bar Twisted, where you can enjoy a free glass of wine between 4.58pm and 6.03pm before heading back into the city for dinner.
