Best breakfast in Mexico City: My 5 favorite spots

This post is also available in: Nederlands (Dutch)

One of my favorite things about a city trip? Starting the day with a great breakfast out. Luckily, when it comes to breakfast in Mexico City, you’re in the right place. Especially in the neighborhoods of Roma Norte and Condesa, the streets are filled with cozy cafés and trendy breakfast spots. And since many hotels are based in these areas (I stayed at ONTO in Roma Norte and Hotel San Fernando in Condesa), you never have to go far for a delicious start to the day.

Whether you’re craving a hearty brunch or a light bite to kick things off, these are my top picks for breakfast in Mexico City. Looking for something sweet with a good coffee? Check out my post with my favorite coffee shops and bakeries in the city.

Panadería Rosetta

If there’s one place that everyone seems to recommend for breakfast in Mexico City, it’s Panadería Rosetta. This beautiful bakery in Roma Norte is owned by the chef behind Rosetta, the Michelin-starred restaurant just a few doors down. Here, Mexican and French influences come together in the most mouthwatering pastries. Especially the now-famous guava roll!

You can grab something to go from the bakery, or sit at the bar inside or outside on the terrace. Go early if you want to skip the crowds, especially on weekends. There’s a second location about a 15-minute walk away that’s usually a bit quieter.

Mendl Delicatessen

Getting a good bagel in the Netherlands is no easy feat. So when I spotted Mendl Delicatessen just around the corner from my hotel in Condesa, I knew I had to try it.

You can get coffee and food to go (perfect if you’re headed for a walk through Parque México), but it’s also a great spot to sit down for brunch.

The interior is bright and spacious, and the menu includes bagels and other tasty brunch dishes. I ordered a cappuccino and an everything bagel with cream cheese and salmon. Not the most original choice, but super satisfying.

Cafe Milou

Cafe Milou is one of those spots that does really well on Instagram, which is how it ended up on my list.

You can’t make a reservation here, and with limited seating, that means you might have to wait. But thanks to my jet lag, I arrived right after opening on a weekday with plenty of room to spare.

The menu is small but well-curated. I ordered the avocado toast which I know is not the most adventurous pick, but definitely one of the best I’ve ever had. You can tell those avocados didn’t travel halfway across the world. So much flavor! I also tried a croissant, which didn’t quite live up to my Rosetta experience, but the coffee was great.

Lardo

Apparently, Instagram loves a good brunch spot in Mexico City, because Lardo popped up on my feed again and again as a must-visit.

And now that I’ve eaten there, I totally get why. It’s a warm, welcoming place (I sat at the bar), and the food is excellent. They also bake amazing pastries, so if you can’t get a table, grab something sweet to go. Like the guava roll which was almost as good as the one from Rosetta, and one of my favorite discoveries in Mexico City.

Address: Agustín Melgar 6, Condesa, Mexico City

Malcriado

You can only have brunch at Malcriado on weekends. I went to the smaller location in Condesa, but there’s a larger branch in Polanco as well. The menu is simple but solid, and the outdoor seating along the street is a nice bonus.

Address: C. Atlixco 127, Condesa, Mexico City

Whether you’re an early riser or prefer a slow start with a cappuccino and something sweet, breakfast in Mexico City is amazing. I would happily return to all these spots, although I also can’t wait to try others I didn’t get to this time.
