The Collector Hotel: a stylish stay in the heart of The Hague

This post is also available in: Nederlands (Dutch)

I love The Hague. It’s where I live, and over the years I’ve figured out exactly where to go for the best coffee, the most interesting museums, and the nicest shops and restaurants. But when it came to hotel tips, especially boutique stays like The Collector Hotel, I didn’t have much to share. I mean, why book a hotel in your own city?

That’s changing. I’ve started planning a few local staycations to personally test and review some of The Hague’s best boutique hotels. After writing about my experience at De Plesman, it’s now time for a closer look at The Collector Hotel.

Boutique hotel in The Hague’s city centre

Hotel The Collector is located on the charming Haagsche Bluf courtyard, right in the center of town, just behind the main shopping streets.

What makes this square so unique is the mix of architectural styles. Even though it’s relatively new, the facades around the courtyard are replicas of 16th-19th century historic buildings from The Hague and Delft.

They used parts and materials from all over the world to create this look. And right in the middle of the square you’ll find original 18th-century French fountains.

The buildings may not be actual monuments, but the setting has that hidden-city feel that perfectly fits the hotel.

Basecamp lobby: more than just a hotel bar

I actually knew The Collector before staying the night. It’s one of my favorite spots to go when I want to work outside the house. The vibe is relaxed, I love the design, the Wi-Fi is fast, and the coffee is genuinely great. Not a minor detail.

The lobby (called Basecamp) feels like a modern, creative living room. Never too busy, but always buzzing enough to feel inspiring. So naturally, I was curious to see the rest of the hotel.

Check-in and first impressions

The day before arrival, I receive an email inviting me to check in online. Super convenient so when I get there, I can grab my key and head straight to my room.

You get why it’s called The Collector the moment you walk in. Art on the walls, carefully chosen design pieces… the whole space has this eclectic, stylish vibe. It’s warm, a little quirky, and full of character. Definitely not your standard hotel look. This place has a story to tell.

The room: artsy with a view

The hotel has 57 rooms. I’m staying in one of the larger ones (“The Gallery”) on the top floor. It’s a corner room with windows on two sides, giving me views of the city and the Haagsche Bluf courtyard below.

With 18 sq meters the room isn’t huge, but it’s spacious enough for a comfortable night. I love the bold, colorful artwork above the bed that ties perfectly into the hotel’s creative feel.

There’s a big TV mounted on the wall that tilts so you can stream your own shows from your bed. Handy USB ports and outlets right by the bed are also a plus.

There’s no minibar or complimentary bottled water (snacks are available downstairs), but you do get a Nespresso machine and a kettle. If you want to sit down and relax, you’ll need to do that on the bed or downstairs in the lobby. There’s no separate seating area in the room.

Food & drinks at the hotel

By late afternoon, I head down to the lobby and treat myself to a glass of wine and some bar snacks which are both excellent. They also have a surprisingly good cocktail menu if you’re in the mood for something a bit stronger.

You can have lunch at The Collector, but not dinner. Which isn’t really a problem. After all, you’re surrounded by great places to eat, all within walking distance.

Breakfast: a solid start to the day

Breakfast is always an important part of any hotel review for me. And thankfully, The Collector doesn’t disappoint. When I come downstairs, there’s a generous buffet with both hot and cold options, sweet and savory. Everything is fresh, well-presented, and tasty.

The only thing I missed was fresh coffee. In the mornings, they use a self-serve machine, which is a bit of a letdown considering how good their cappuccinos usually are. A small detail in an otherwise great start to the day.

A great boutique hotel for a The Hague city break

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway or, like me, want to treat yourself to a night in your own city: The Collector hotel is absolutely worth checking out if you’re looking for an affordable, modern boutique hotel in the heart of The Hague.

With its artistic interior, relaxed lobby vibe, and peaceful-yet-central location, it’s the perfect base to explore the city.
